After 6 Months In The Hospital, World’s Smallest Premature Baby Goes Home Healthy
We all know how long the standard pregnancy lasts. And, when the baby for reasons that are out of the mother’s and the doctors’ influence comes out earlier, we call it premature pregnancy. Premature pregnancy is not as rare as you might think it could be. But, when the doctors saved the youngest, premature baby that has survived outside of the mother’s womb and they got it from continuous medical care to a healthy and strong baby that could go home, they were so surprised that they called it a miracle… They managed to keep the baby alive and under serious medical care for nearly six months, and at the end, they beat the odds and managed to get the baby ready to leave the hospital and go home with its mother.
Japan is not a common place where premature or babies with low weight on birth babies are born. But, once this baby’s parents were warned that their child wasn’t gaining weight for some reason, the doctors said that they will have to deliver the baby earlier and try to save it. They managed to deliver it via an emergency C-section, and the baby was born early, in August 2018 in the Tokyo Keio University Hospital. The parents were scared, and they didn’t know if their little boy was going to make it. The baby’s initial birth weight was only 268g or 9.45 oz.
The baby was born in the 24th week of the mother’s pregnancy. So, as you might expect from a 24-week-old baby, it was pretty small. In fact, it was so small, that it could fit in the doctor’s palm. The doctor that was in charge of the baby’s 24/7 care was Dr. Takeshi Aimitsu. In the hospital’s neonatal intensive care, Dr. Takeshi decided that the baby would need breathing support as well as infusion therapy in order to stay alive. And, that’s what they did…
The premature babies that are born with birth weight under 300 g in Japan are 50 percent. And, when we’re talking only boys, the chances of surviving are much slimmer compared to the chances of premature babies under 300 g. The baby spent 5 months being cared for by the staff at Keio University Hospital, Tokyo, Japan. And, the world was amazed that they managed to keep it alive.
After the boy started steadily increasing his weight, he also started to develop the ability to eat consistently and normally. The boy managed to gain weight and he actually got to 7 pounds by the time that they left the hospital on February 20th, 2019. His mother stated that she was so thankful that the doctors managed to keep him alive, and she was happy to see her baby boy has grown because she wasn’t sure if he could survive.
He is Home Finally
The parents to the smallest premature baby got to hold him for the first time two months after his mother should have delivered him on time. Dr. Takeshi Arimitsu said that the baby was not only the smallest baby that he has ever held, but he also added that he was the smallest baby boy that has survived in the whole wide world.
Dr. Takeshi also added that he was pleasured that he could save this amazing baby, and he also added that this case was a proof that babies can leave hospital healthy and alive despite the fact that they’re born small and in a premature pregnancy.
